Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) August 14, 2004 -- Whether they've written for years or are just starting out, authors specializing in books for children of all ages will have the opportunity to discuss the finer points of the craft at the upcoming "Roots & Wings" writers workshop Sept. 17-19, 2004 in Gainesville, Florida.

Co-sponsored by the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts and the University of Florida's Center for Children's Literature and Culture, the three-day workshop features sessions focussing on both young children and adolescents.

Covering the youngsters is John Cech, host of "Recess!" which is heard on National Public Radio stations from coast to coast. Cech says that while good books for children often appeal to adults, creating a good children's book requires a somewhat different set of skills.

"There are some very real differences in subject matter, language, style, and tone between writing for children and writing for adults," Cech says. "A conference such as 'Roots and Wings' helps to focus our attention on the particular challenges of writing good books for children."

Also on the workshop faculty is Linda Evans, an internationally published author of eight science fiction novels including The Far Edge of Darkness and For King and Country. Evans' sessions will focus on world building and character creation for science fiction and fantasy novels, with a special focus on writing for adolescents, which is Evans' specialty.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to find out about what is hot in children's books straight from the horse's mouth in the form of Agent Tracey Adams, founder of the Adams Literary Agency, and Samantha McFerrin, an editor with Harcourt Children's Books.

Adams and McFerrin will head up the First Page Critique session, in which authors can submit the first page of any novel, children's book or manuscript to be read aloud and discussed by their fellow participants. Since the manuscripts will be read anonymously, the sessions should be helpful to writers regardless of their experience level.

Workshop sessions will be held in the historic Thomas Center, heart of cultural Gainesville. Earlybird registration for the workshop is $135 prior to Aug. 20 not including an optional trip to see Shakespeare's Richard III on Saturday evening. Regular registration after Aug. 21 is $150.
